Review

Poets and songwriters use poetic devices to express moods and themes.

Review the terms you have examined in this unit: sound devices, imagery, and literary devices.

See how many you can identify in these two songs. How do they contribute to the message of the poem?
Sometimes, using precise adjectives or strong verbs can create a poetic device at the same time.

For example, to say that a drill sergeant barked orders at the soldiers is to use a strong verb that also creates a metaphor, comparing the sergeant to a dog.
Similarly, in "Song of the Dream People", the singer's use of the strong verb break(s) creates a comparison between the way the narwhal shoots out of the water and the way the singer's voice forces its way out of his throat.

This adds to the idea that the singer cannot help but cry out, when he thinks of being too old to hunt the narwhal.
