3.6 Lesson

Emotion in  Poetry

Target

Assignment

In this lesson the poems you will read are spoken from the heart.
Poets react to a situation by pouring their feelings onto a page and sharing them with others, so that others can empathize.

Listen to the spoken word poem "To This Day" by Shane Koyczan.

Read the spoken word poem "To This Day" by Shane Koyczan by typing the name of the poet and title into Google.

People who make unusual connections between two items are often misunderstood by others.  Sometimes puns (plays on words) can cause misunderstanding. The speaker of this selection confuses the meaning of "pork chop" with "karate chop". This difference causes a major problem for the speaker.

  • Is this selection a poem? Why or why not?
  • What about the following free verse poems?
There is a debate about whether selections such as "To This Day", "It's Different Now", and "Who Is Disabled?" are poetry.

Consider whether or not the poems you will read in this lesson have poetic features.
