Character Motivation

In "Thank You Ma'am," Roger at first believes a pair of blue suede shoes is necessary for him to live a happy and fulfilling life. He has no money, so he tries to take someone's purse. Do you think Roger will change his values because he met Mrs. Bates-Jones?

Mrs. Bates-Jones believes virtue or decency is what is necessary to live a happy and fulfilling life. She values:

  • kindness
  • faith
  • generosity
  • goodness
  • strong values
  • hard work
  • respectability
  • trustworthiness
  • self-control

Because she has worked hard, she is able to give to others. Will her values influence Roger?

Once you have read a story closely, you will be able to analyze character well.
