Language Arts 8 Final Exam - Study Guide


The final exam was designed to be completed in 1.5 hours, however, double-time is available. There will be a timer that counts down from 3 hours once you start the exam. The exam is based on the content you learned in all 5-Units of your Language Arts 8 course this year.


Prior to the exam:

  1. Review Glossary terms from Units 1 to 3 and from 4 to 5.
  2. Review Parts of Speech reviewed in Units 1 to 4.
  3. Review Unit 1 Visual Literacy, Lessons 1 to 5 for specific photography, advertising, graphic images, and film terms and definitions. Review The Elements of Film JH/SH ADLC Tutorial.
  4. Review Unit 2 Nonfiction for examples of nonfiction writing, sentence, paragraph, and essay construction.
  5. Review Unit 3 Poetry for kinds of poetry studied, examples of poetic techniques, and figurative language.
  6. Review Unit 4 Short Stories and Unit 5 Novel study for definitions of story elements, character types, plot devices, point of view, use of symbol and irony, writing dialogue and using quotation marks , and development of theme. (As well, review elements particular to novels: subplots, features of novels).


Your final exam consists of 5 sections:

Part A: Multiple-Choice (Grammar)
Part B: Matching Questions
Part C: Reading Comprehension
Part D: Multiple-Choice /Short Answer (Unit 1-5 Content) 
Part E: Writing Assignment
This exam will make up 20% of your final grade for the course. 
Note: This exam requires a supervisor.



  • This exam is to be completed without the use of a dictionary, thesaurus, or any reference materials.
  • Before you begin to write this exam, read through the entire exam quickly, so you know what you are required to do and distribute your time accordingly.
  • Be sure to review the vocabulary and concepts in the glossaries.
