4.11 Self-Assessment: Idioms




"She knifed him in the back" or "she back-stabbed him" usually means he was betrayed.

Some other examples of idioms:

  •     It's time to hit the hay.    The real meaning is "It's time to go to bed."
  •     I have a frog in my throat.  The real meaning is "My voice is hoarse."
  •     She's going to spill the beans.  The real meaning is "She's going to tell the secret."

Take idioms literally and enjoy a source of humour, as in the following riddle:

     Question:  What goes, "Ha, ha, ha...thunk"?

A monster, laughing his head off.
