4.15 Self-Assessment: Wish Tales

For ages, people have had secret fantasies about achieving fame, health, and wealth easily.

What motivates us to play the lottery? Do we think about what it would be like to win when we scratch the ticket or select our magic numbers?

We dream about how life would be different if we were a bazillionaire. We wouldn't have any problems and could do whatever we wanted!

The stories we tell ourselves have universal appeal. Therefore, tales of leprechauns, genies, fairy godmothers, and other beings with the ability to grant wishes appear in the literature of many cultures.

Some examples:

  • Aladdin and the Magic Lamp
  • Cinderella
  • The Fisherman and His Wife

The English fairy tale, "The Three Wishes", is a classic example of a wish story.  Click here to read one version of it now.

A common message or lesson in wish tales is not to be greedy or to realize that happiness does not come from riches or from being someone one is not.
