Welcome to Social Studies 30-2

Understandings of Ideologies.

This Grade 12 course is part of Alberta Education's social studies curriculum that is designed to meet the needs of Alberta's students with a focus on identity and citizenship. In this course, you need to be:

  • self-disciplined, curious, responsible, open-minded, and trusting

  • willing to think and willing to learn

You may find yourself confused sometimes, not just by the course content, but perhaps by distance learning as well. Learning at a distance can be difficult. When you have problems using the technology or understanding a concept, realize that teachers, facilitators, and your fellow students are always ready to help. In fact, you are not alone. You are part of a unique community of learners!

Ideology is not just a big word; it's a huge concept. You will examine the origins, values, and workings of competing ideologies. You will explore multiple perspectives about the relationships among individualism, liberalism, the common good, and collectivism. An examination of an assortment of political and economic systems allows you to decide whether the values of liberalism are practical. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage you to respond to developing global issues.
