1.4 Which Beliefs and Values Should Shape My Ideology?

A person's beliefs and values are usually rooted in the ideas of individualism or collectivism or perhaps even in both. Generally, individualism and collectivism can be defined in the following ways:

Individualism

Collectivism

A belief in the value of the individual above the group; that is, the individual is more important than the group.  A belief in the value of the collective, or group above the individual; that is, the group is more important than the individual.

Read "Collective and Individual Beliefs and Values" on pages 6 to 9 of your textbook, Understandings of Ideologies. These pages will further your understanding of the concepts of beliefs and values, individualism, and collectivism. Be sure to complete the survey on page 7 as you read this section.

You should make notes, either on paper or on your computer, about what you have read. You may want to read the tutorial How to Make Notes. When you have finished the tutorial, return here to continue this unit.

Did you complete the survey, "Collectivism or Individualism: Where Do You Fit?" on page 7 of your textbook? If you did not, please return and complete it now; the instructions for completing the survey start at the bottom of page 6 and continue to the top of page 8.

After you have completed the textbook survey on page 7 and scored your answers, consider the results to evaluate what you may have found out about yourself. Your beliefs and values probably consist of a mixture of individualism and collectivism, but you may lean more towards one or the other.

Did you lean toward individualism or collectivism?

Your life's individual and collective influences and experiences influence your identity and determine your beliefs and values which allow you to embrace an ideology. Your beliefs and values are an important part of your identity. This set of beliefs and values, along with your ideology, make you who you are.
