1.14.1 Contending
Nationalist and Non-nationalist Loyalties
Should
nation
be the foundation of
identity?
Big Ideas:
-
People may have non-nationalist loyalties such as religion, culture, race, ideology, class, and geographic region.
-
People with different nationalist and
non-nationalist loyalties
may contend (conflict) with each other.
-
Reconciling contending nationalist and
non-nationalist loyalties
requires effort.
People are complicated beings. There is never a simple explanation to describe a person. It would be difficult to find someone who is loyal to only one thing, one group, or one idea. On the previous page, you saw examples of
non-nationalist loyalties. Even among the citizens of one
nation there will always be differences in
non-nationalist loyalties. There is often conflict between people in a society because of their differing loyalties. Such conflict between contending nationalist and
non-nationalist loyalties
may be minor or it may rise into confrontation, or even violence.

Reconciling Nationalist and
Non-nationalist Loyalties
Just like reconciling contending
nationalist loyalties, it is important that
civic nationalism be foremost in people's minds when reconciling nationalist and
non-nationalist loyalties.
Everyone has different
perspectives and
non-nationalist loyalties,
but common goals have the power to promote
reconciliation.
