Lesson 1 — Activity 2: Developing
Identity
The definitions of identity that you considered in the first activity of this lesson gave you some ideas about what identity means. You also constructed your own definition of the word.
You probably have heard identity used in various situations, too. For example, you might have watched the Spiderman or Batman movies or read the comics and saw that the superheroes kept their identities secret from the people they knew in their everyday lives as Peter Parker or Bruce Wayne, respectively. In social studies classes, you might have compared people from various countries and looked at symbols of their national identities, such as the maple leaf, hockey, and the loonie for Canadians.

When you think about identity, you probably have some ideas about what makes up your identity, such as the following:
-
where you were born
- where you live
- who you live with
- where your family or ancestors came from
- what you like to do
- what you don't like to do
- who your friends are
- what your goals or ambitions are
- who you admire or look up to
- what you do for work or as a volunteer
- what your interests are in music, sports, friends, etc.
- what is important to you
- what you have accomplished or achieved
Because each person's identity is unique and special to that person, there are probably as many elements of identity as there are people! In this activity, you will think about some of the aspects that help to create various people's identities.
