Lesson 2Activity 1: Defining Moments

You have thought a bit about how you would describe yourself to others who are meeting you for the first time. You have also asked and answered some questions in order to share more information with your classmates and teachers in Lesson 1. Now you are ready to reflect on events in your life that have helped to shape your personality or identity.

The poem "Fifteen" by William Stafford, an American poet, describes a vivid memory a man has of a summer day when he was 15 years old and he came across a motorcycle and its driver who had been in a small accident.

This poem is an interesting description of a memory when a young man had the chance to imagine taking off down the road on the motorcycle and be adventurous and independent. Ultimately, he was responsible and helped the owner of the bike get back on the road safely. It also describes some of the frustration that teenagers feel at not having as much freedom as they might like and the anticipation of one day being on their own.
