Theme 2: Constructing Meaning in Literature


In this theme, you will learn the importance of the text's meaning to the reader. Responding to literature is the way you react to something that you have read or listened to. This process begins as you think about the text before you read it and continues during and after reading. When you respond to something that you have read, it helps you to develop a deeper understanding of what you have read, and it also helps you relate what you have read to your own personal experiences.


This theme includes five lessons:

  • Lesson 1 — Idioms, Jargon, and Illustrations
  • Lesson 2 — Understanding and Interpreting Content
  • Lesson 3 — Imagery in Literature and Viewing Experiences
  • Lesson 4 — Figurative Language, Audience, and Intended Messages
