Lesson 9:

Figurative Language, Audience, and Intended Messages

This lesson focuses on three things that can entertain and educate: comics, music, and advertisements.

The types of comics you will examine are called political cartoons, which are comics that make statements about what is going on in society. You will look at the works of a famous Canadian and learn more about his craft.

Music is another area that you will examine in this lesson. The words or lyrics, that go along with particular songs are actually a type of poetry. You will look at some famous songs as well as examine some of your own to learn more about the types of language in this form of writing as well as the message in songs.

Advertisements seem to be everywhere! Not to be influenced by advertisements is difficult. You will consider for whom the ads are designed and what they mean. You will have a chance to talk about ads that catch your attention and why you like them.
