Print Images, Purpose, and Content in Marketing


You have looked at some images in the previous lesson to determine who specific ads were for. You looked at the audience in that activity.

In this activity, you will look at advertising images again but for different reasons. Advertisers choose their audiences carefully, and they also have a clear purpose and message in mind to help them sell their products or services.

When you go shopping, why do you buy the products that you do? What makes you choose one brand over another? Companies spend millions of dollars on advertising campaigns every year to try to convince you to buy their brand. Are you influenced by the advertisements you read, listen to, and view?

Think about the brand name products you use. Can you think of a specific ad a company has created to make people look at and buy their product?

McDonald's fast food restaurant has ads on TV, online, in newspapers and magazines, on billboards, and on clothing. This famous and international company has had numerous ad campaigns over the years. Can you think of a specific McDonald's ad? Are you familiar with their current slogan — their famous slogan is "I'm Lovin' It!" Can you hear the jingle in your mind when you read this phrase?

Convincing people to buy a service or a product is called marketing. Many people work hard trying to get people to buy specific products or services. Read this quote from the McDonald's Canada website about the marketing of their food products:
