Lesson 10Activity 3:

Multimedia Advertisements: Purpose and Content

The first film, Onslaught, has a clear message and purpose about advertisements youth are exposed to. The film encourages parents and other adults to talk to youth about the images they see in the media and how viewing these repeatedly can affect how people feel about the size and shape of their bodies and their appearance.

The Dove film Evolution takes an interesting and somewhat shocking look at a model doing a photo shoot for a makeup advertisement. It very clearly illustrates how one's physical image can be transformed through artificial means.

Television is probably one of the most powerful mediums in your life. It may have far more influence on your ideas and beliefs than you realize. It likely affects what you eat, how you spend your money, and what you think. It may even control what you do and when you do it.

The next time you sit down to watch a television show, surf the Internet, or read a magazine, keep in mind what the film and activities in this lesson have taught you about multimedia advertising. Remember that everything you see in the media probably is not real. Share these online films with your friends, teachers, and family members. It will be interesting for you to share your thoughts and opinions with those you are closest to. If you have time, watch some of the other film clips that also have interesting messages.
