Lesson 15Activity 1:

Writing a Conclusion

The conclusion is the last paragraph of a report; it concludes or finishes your report.

The conclusion focuses on all the main points in the body of the report and refers to the topic statement used in the introduction. The concluding paragraph begins with a concluding sentence that signals to your reader that you are ending the report. Then, it summarizes the main points you covered in your body paragraphs. One rule when writing a conclusion is to never include new information. Only emphasize what you have already written. You can begin with the words "In conclusion," but this is not always necessary (in fact, it is boring!). Be creative with the words you choose to end your report.

Here is an example of a conclusion for a report on the career of hairstylist:

"All things considered, there are many factors to think about when looking into a career as a hairstylist. Duties, working conditions, personal characteristics, educational requirements, and locations of employment are important areas to research before committing to any career. From what I have learned about hairstyling from researching these points, I know for certain that this career would suit me!"
