Lesson 19 — Activity 1:
Finding a Job

So how do you begin to find available jobs that you are interested in? You have already visited the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) website. This is a great starting point, as the ALIS website gives information on different types of careers
as well as how to search and apply for jobs.
Click here to go to the ALIS website Job Seekers page. This page gives you information on how to connect to job search resources, job postings, industry information, and work options. Spend some time on this page to become familiar with the options that ALIS provides, including: Alberta work search online, job postings, and career events.

Another place to look for available jobs is in the advertisements. Below are some tips that you can use to help you find jobs that may be open in your area of interest.
- Newspapers — most newspapers have a classified ads section that lists available jobs. Most newspapers can also be found online.
- The federal and provincial governments have career centres that post available jobs. They can also provide counsellors to help you find employment.

- Some jobs are posted at career fairs and shows.
- Some businesses advertise jobs on their websites.
- Websites such as Workopolis.com, Indeed.com, and Monster.ca are great places to start searching for jobs that are available in your areas of interest.
Networking can also be a way to learn about potential job openings. Networking is when you make contact and exchange information with other people, groups, and businesses. A personal network can include your family members, friends, people at school, co-workers, and former and present employers. Let people know who you are, and tell them that you are looking for a job. Be sure to tell them the kind of things that you can do.

Check to see if they can do any of the following things for you:
- think of any openings they may have heard of
- mention you to their friends or supervisors to let them know you are looking for work
- let you know of a few places that you could apply for work
Networking can be an important part of the job search process. It is the only way you can find out about jobs that are not advertised.
Self-check!
Make a list of the people in your network that you could ask about possible job openings. Choose two of these people and find out if they might know of any job openings that are available for you to apply to.
