Lesson 19Activity 2:

Preparing for the Interview

Getting to the interview stage in the job-search process is a great achievement! You may or may not have been on a job interview before. The purpose of the interview is for the company to get a good look at you. It is the company's chance to ask you questions about your work experience, your interests, your skills, and your abilities.

The interview is also your opportunity to look at the company. You get to ask questions about what the company does and what your job would look like. It is your opportunity to see if the company is right for you!

Preparing for an interview is a very important step. It is important to practise answering some potential interview questions so that you can feel more confident when you are in the actual interview.

The following are the steps to prepare for an interview.

  • Research the company to find out more about them. You can look at the company's website or ask people who know about the company. Use the information you find to write down a few questions you may have about the company and take them to your interview. Here are some questions to help you with your research.
    1. What does the company do?
    2. What is involved in the position you are applying for?
    3. What qualifications do you need for the position?
    4. What kind of skills is the employer looking for?
    5. Who are the customers or clients?
  • Practise with a friend. If you practise answering interview questions with someone that you know well, this will help you to get comfortable with giving answers to your potential employer. Practise giving complete answers and maintaining eye contact with the interviewer while you give them. Make sure you aren't speaking too slow or too fast when you give your answers.

  • Think about possible questions that the interviewer might ask you in the interview. It is best to prepare for a wide variety of questions. Here are some questions you should be comfortable answering.
    • Why do you want this job?
    • How did you become interested in this field of work?
    • What do you have to offer this company?
    • What is your biggest weakness?
    • What is your biggest strength?
    • Where do you see yourself in five years?
