Lesson 20 β Activity 2:
Written Communication in the Workplace
In the English courses you have taken throughout your years in school, you have likely had to write a letter or two. Because of your experience with letter writing, this lesson is a review!
The business letter is used in the workplace and is usually written by the office secretary, although in small businesses one or more of the employees might be responsible for letter writing, depending upon their duties within the company.
Business letters are written for various reasons: information about sales, billing, purchasing, invitations to events, thank-you notes, and general information on products or services a company sells.

A personal letter is written to a friend or acquaintance and is about your own personal life and not for business purposes. Writing a traditional personal letter is becoming less frequent due to e-mail and text messaging communication. However,
people generally feel special when they receive a personal letter in the mail! Letter writing is considered to be a very thoughtful and generous act because it takes a lot more time to handwrite and mail a note to someone rather than typing it and
hitting βsend.β In this course, you will not review or write a personal letter.
