Lesson 22 — Activity 3: Chapters 5 – 7
Before starting this activity, please read chapters 5 to 7 of the novel. Remember to think about the strategies you can use as you read.
In chapter 5, you learn more about Geraldine, Noah's classmate who works at the Northern, which is one of only two stores in George River. You get the feeling that Noah might have a crush on Geraldine, as he notices her black hair as it gleams under the harsh store lights.

In chapter 6, you find out that Noah will be going winter camping with Joseph (who runs the Individual Path of Learning program at the school) and with other students at Noah's school. However, Noah doesn't seem too thrilled with the idea, as he can't understand why anyone would want to suffer on the frozen tundra in –30 degree weather. However, he agrees to go on the trip, even though winter camping is about the last thing on Earth he wants to do.
Chapter 7 gives the reader a bit more insight into how the Inuit people were treated by the white southerners who first came to Nunavik to set up trading posts, like the Hudson's Bay Company. The southerners didn't understand the Inuit's nomadic ways (people who travel from place to place). They thought the Inuit would be better off if they had a permanent settlement, so they helped build towns like George River. However, you learn as the chapter continues that the southerners killed off the Inuit's sled dogs so the Inuit wouldn't be able to leave, as they relied on the dogs for transportation.
The chapter ends as you read that it is going to be a very cold camping weekend with temperatures of –50 degrees, and even colder with the wind. Noah learns that he will need to borrow some proper clothes if he is going to survive the frigid temperatures out in the wilderness.
Self-check!
Inuit sled dogs have been and continue to be very important to the Inuit people. Look up Inuit sled dogs on the Internet, and list six facts that you learn. Find a picture of an Inuit sled dog, and attach it to your facts before you
hand it in.
