Lesson 23 β€” Activity 2: Chapters 12 – 13

Before starting this activity, please read chapters 12 and 13 of the novel. Remember to think about the strategies you can use as you read.

More on Character:

Now that you are well into your novel study, you will look more at the different types of characters.

The following terms are used to determine the type of character presented in a story:

Round character:
  • Most protagonists are round characters as the reader learns quite a lot about this person.

Flat character:
  • The reader is given little information about such a character.
  • This usually applies to minor characters in a story.

It is also important to see whether or not a character changes as a result of his or her experiences.

Static character:
  • Just as some people refuse to change their attitudes or don’t seem to learn from their mistakes, not all characters in stories grow as a result of their experiences. A character that stays the same is said to be static.

Gale Hawthorne is a static character.

In chapter 12, everyone is in the cabin where they will be spending the weekend. Steve discusses how the owner of the cabin now lives in Toronto as he was too far away from his children. Steve says to Noah, "I'm sure it's hard for your dad too," and Noah replies "I guess, we never lived together long enough for him to miss me." Lenny had been listening to their conversation, and he mutters, "At least you've got a dad." Noah wonders if this means that Lenny doesn't have a dad, however, he just looks at Lenny and doesn't ask. Lenny begins to tell a story about when Noah's father slept on a rock ledge. Noah listens to the story and then says, "Funny. My dad never told me that story."

In chapter 13, Noah joins the dogsled team as they head for Short Lake, where they will set the net to catch fish. At this point in the story, they run into Geraldine who was also out at Spring Lake fishing with her dad. Noah is happy that Geraldine is now part of their group. The crew stay in a tent, which is located around the lake. They set their nets in the hopes of catching fresh Arctic char for breakfast.
