Lesson 23 — Activity 4: Chapters 17 – 18
Before starting this activity, please read chapters 17 and 18 of the novel. Remember to think about the strategies you can use as you read.
In chapter 17, the group tries to stop the bleeding from Joseph's hand where he cut off his thumb. However, the blood keeps seeping through the towels, and they decide they need to make a tourniquet
(a device for stopping the flow of blood, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage). They use the satellite phone to call Noah's dad for help.

In chapter 18, they learn that Joseph will need a surgeon to reattach his thumb, so Steve makes the decision to take Joseph back to town using the dogsled. The rest of the group stays back at the tent. They all head back to the lake to gather the fish, taking Etua with them to keep an eye on him.
Later, Lenny calls Noah from out on the ice and asks for his help with the nets, but it is hard for Noah to see how far away he is exactly because of the way the snow is blowing. However, when the wind dies down, and he gets to where the voice is, Lenny isn't there. Noah hears Lenny's voice again, only now his voice is coming from a different direction altogether. Again, he follows Lenny's voice, but when he gets there, Lenny is gone.
