Lesson 27 — Activity 2: Learning about the Author
You might be reading a novel in this
theme which could be called young-adult fiction. This type of fiction might be called "YA fiction" in your school or local library.
YA fiction novels are stories for and about teenagers and preteens. The main characters in these novels are usually between 12 and 18 years old. Sometimes the main characters might be as young as 10 years old. (It doesn’t mean that only young people will enjoy these stories though. Even people over 18 can enjoy these types of books.)
But many authors of YA fiction enjoy writing especially for teenagers. YA authors think there’s something very rewarding about writing for this age group. They say teens often respond to stories they identify with more strongly than adult readers do.

Book reviewers often say that the best YA fiction writers are successful because they are able to see the world through a young person’s eyes.
Here’s a quote from Veronica Roth, who wrote the Divergent series of books.
“I think everyone’s got a little teenager inside of them still, and you just have to work to help yourself access that teenager. Every now and then, I find myself having a character make a decision that feels very adult without having them earn it, and I have to go back and make sure I’m letting the characters make mistakes they would in real life at that age, like a parent.”
