Unit 1

Renaissance: The Origins of a Western Worldview

Chapter 2 Introduction

How would increased trade and business change a society's worldview?

You have probably heard of Marco Polo, a famous explorer from long ago.

Polo claimed to have left Italy and spent 20 years in China as an envoy for the Kubla Khan, the emperor of China. At this time, many Europeans thought China was just something in a story - not a real place.

Marco Polo was one of the first Europeans to go to China. Although there is some controversy over whether Marco Polo really did all the things he claimed in his writings, most scholars believe that he really was in China.
