Why would a society decide to explore beyond its own borders?


Chapter 5 is about the Age of Exploration, the time in which many Europeans set out in ships hoping to discover new lands, people, and goods.


Look at the maps in Figures 5.1 and 5.2.


Figure 5.1 is a map of the world drawn in 1489 by Henricus Martellus.

What does it tell you about the knowledge of the world at the time?
