The instrument in Figure 5.1 is a cross-staff. It was used during the Age of Exploration, first for astronomy and then for navigation.


The cross-staff is an example of the breakthroughs in technology that made the Age of Exploration possible.

Without this and many other technological achievements during the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration would not have begun.
