Chapter 6 Introduction
How can expansion change worldviews?
Chapter 6 is about the gradual change Europeans experienced from expansionism to imperialism.
The cartoon in Figure 6.1, The World's Plunderers, by Robert Nash,
was in Harper's Weekly magazine in 1885.
In the cartoon, Britain, Germany, and Russia are dividing Africa and Asia as they choose. This cartoon reveals that the artist, Robert Nash, seems to disapprove of the actions of these countries.

The cartoon in Figure 6.2, Imperialism in the XIX Century, was
drawn by crazy-melody and published on the Internet between 2012 and
2014.
The cartoon shows English Queen Victoria, Japanese Emperor Yoshihito, American President Cleveland, French President Grevy, and German Chancellor Von Bismarck fighting over the world in a fashion similar to that shown in the previous cartoon. This artist seems to disapprove of these actions as well.

What happened in Europe in the preceding centuries (during the Renaissance) that led to this?
Imperialism is the self-chosen extension of power over a territory, its resources, and its people, without the consent of the people who live there already.
Think about the following questions.
- Why did the Europeans think they had the right to do this?
- How did imperialism develop?
