During the Age of Exploration, competition developed among European nations over the "New World" and its riches.


Privateers (owners and operators of ships that were financed by a government to attack and capture enemy vessels, and steal their cargo - government pirates, if you like) became common on the seas.

Learning about one such privateer allows you to do some critical thinking about point of view.

Lesson 1 is about the ship's captain you see in Figure 6.1.
