1. In the past, Japanese people held beliefs about gods that influenced their daily lives, just as people did in other places in the world.


2. Read pages 262 and 263 in your textbook.
   
   These pages tell you more about the traditional beliefs of the Japanese people. Study the illustrations and the map on these pages.
• Answer the following questions in your Reading/Study Guide.
  
  
• Where did the ancient Japanese believe the sun rose every day?
  
• What else came from Japan?
  
• What does the position of Japan in the 1850 map say about how the Japanese viewed their importance in the world?
  


3. Read the paragraph at the top of page 265 in the textbook.

• Consider the size of Japan and the population.  How does the size of Japan affect its population density?


4. Read ""A Land Apart" on pages 265 and 266 as well as the remainder of page 266 of the textbook.

• How do we know of contact between Japan and its neighbours despite the rough sea?
  
• What did the Japanese borrow freely from other cultures?
