The Edo period in Japan evolved after years of almost constant battles among powerful landowners called daimyo.


One man, Tokugawa Ieyasu, became the most powerful man in Japan when he defeated the other daimyo. The emperor of Japan made Tokugawa Ieyasu the shogun, and the shogun held the power until the end of the Edo period.

During the Edo period, the shogun was even more powerful than the emperor was.

When Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated the other daimyo, everything changed in Japan.
