      • Answer the following questions in your Reading/Study Guide.

        • What role did the samurai have in society?
        • Although the samurai had privileges and status, in what parts of life could they not participate? 
        • What did the samurai do in peacetime?

  4. Read pages 291 to 294 of the textbook.
      • Answer the following questions in your Reading/Study Guide.

        • Why were peasants considered important?
        • Why were artisans placed lower on the hierarchy than peasants were?
        • Who was officially at the bottom of the hierarchy?
        • What was the place of women?
        • What made a person an outcast?

  5. When you are finished, proceed to the next page.
