Chapter 13 Assessment

Who has the Most to Gain or Lose?

In the Edo period, the shogun held all the power in Japan. Very clear rules existed for all parts of society. However, the very first small foreign influences were beginning to be felt.

If foreign influence was going to affect change in Japan, who would have the most to gain? Who would have the most to lose?

Choose one of the following two options.

Create a web that shows all the following:

      • Describe what life was like in Edo Japan for members of this social group.
      • Explain reasons you believe this group would have the most to gain from potential changes in Edo Japan.

  2. Which part of society would have the most to lose if changes came to Edo Japan? Why?
      • Describe what life was like in Edo Japan for members of this social group.
      • Explain reasons you believe this group would have the most to lose from potential change in Edo Japan.
