Where Do I Stand?

The following two mottos or slogans express very different opinions about Edo Japan:

  • Edo Japan: A Wonderful Time of Peace and Prosperity
  • Edo Japan: A Stagnant and Passive Society


Which one do you think is the most accurate slogan for Edo Japan?

Choose one of the following two options.



Write a paragraph or two about which slogan you think describes Edo Japan most accurately.

  • Edo Japan: A Wonderful Time of Peace and Prosperity
  • Edo Japan: A Stagnant and Passive Society


In your response, be sure to

  • provide information about events, circumstances, or developments that occurred in Edo Japan that show it was a time of peace and prosperity or a time of stagnancy and passiveness

  • explain the reasons for your choice and provide specific details to support your choice


Produce an immigration poster for Edo Japan.

First, decide if your poster is intended to make people want to move to Edo Japan or is intended to warn people not to move to Edo Japan.

If your poster is meant to make people want to go to Edo Japan,

  • include the positive aspects about this society
  • provide information about events, circumstances, or developments occurring in Edo Japan that are beneficial
  • use images and words

    You must provide text that explains what it is about Edo Japan that is beneficial.

If your poster is meant to warn people not to go to Edo Japan,

  • include the negative aspects about this society
  • provide information about events, circumstances, or developments occurring in Edo Japan that are detrimental 
  • use images and words

    You must provide text that explains what it is about Edo Japan that is detrimental.

At the top of your poster, put the slogan that you think is most appropriate:
  • Edo Japan: A Wonderful Time of Peace and Prosperity
  • Edo Japan: A Stagnant and Passive Society
Be sure your final product includes all the following:

  • Identification of the most appropriate slogan for Edo Japan

  • Information about events, circumstances, or developments in Edo Japan

  • Option 1:  Explain reasons to support your choice and provide specific details.

  • Option 2:  Images and text are required. You must provide text that explains what it is about Edo Japan that is either beneficial or detrimental.
