Unit 3

From Isolation to Adaptation

Lesson 3

What characteristics of Japanese culture allowed for successful rapid industrialization?

  • isolation
  • worldview

Because of the decision to modernize, Japan had a challenging job ahead. To modernize, Japan would have to industrialize so it could compete with the remainder of the world.

Japan was behind in industrial development because it had not participated in the industrial revolution of other parts of the world. The industrial revolution had occurred during about 100 years. Japan had much less time to catch up.

How would such rapid change affect the Japanese people? How would their culture help with this adaptation? What would they have to do to enable such huge change so quickly?
