How Did They Do It?

Pressures from within and outside of Japan resulted in the end of isolation in Japan. The Japanese people industrialized their country in a very short time.

Choose one of the following two options.


Complete both of the following tasks to complete this assessment.


1. Create a web that explains the changes that occurred in Japan.

Include the following information in your web:

  • Pressures from outside that resulted in change in Japan 
  • Pressures from within that resulted in change in Japan 
  • Factors that contributed to rapid industrialization in Japan


You may use an appropriate mind map program, or you can create your own web.

2. Below your web, or another page, identify the event, occurrence, or factor that was most significant in bringing about change in Japan. Explain why the item you chose was most significant.

1. Write an explanation of the changes that occurred in Japan.

Include the following information in your explanation:

  • Pressures from outside that resulted in change in Japan 
  • Pressures from within that resulted in change in Japan 
  • Factors that contributed to rapid industrialization in Japan

2. Identify the event, occurrence, or factor that was most significant in bringing about change in Japan. Explain why the item you chose was most significant.


Be sure your final product includes all the following:

  • Pressures from outside Japan that brought about change
  • Pressures within Japan that resulted in change 
  • Factors that contributed to the rapid industrialization of Japan
  • Identification of the most significant event, occurrence, or factor and explanation to support choice
