How did the Japanese maintain their sense of identity through the Meiji period and beyond?

Japan continued to grow and change, as it does today.

Many issues that had been problems in Japan during the period of rapid change continued to be problems, but the ability of the Japanese people to adapt to new ways and adopt those that they believe fit with their culture continues.

Japan continues to this day to be a mix of Western and Japanese ideas and cultural influences.
