– 4
Before starting this activity, please read chapters 3 and 4 of the novel. Remember to think about the strategies you can use as you read.
As the third chapter opens, you find out who the windsurfing girl is and discover why she looked angry.
The girl immediately attacks Chris about why the community allowed the incinerator to ruin the beauty of the harbour, reminding Chris of his father. When Chris tries to defend himself and explain how the battle against the incinerator was lost, she is not impressed and heads back into the water on her windsurfer. When Chris tries to catch up with her to find out her name, she shows that she is a skilled surfer and leaves him behind.
Chris does some investigating to find out who the new girl is and learns her name: Marina Ryerson. He finds out that she and her family have moved into an old house along the harbour. Chris spends several hours out on the water windsurfing in an attempt to find Marina.

Finally, Chris decides to take the injured seagull, Jack, to Marina's house and introduce himself.
In chapter 4, Chris and Marina start to become friends.
Marina's home on the harbour has a beautiful view, except for the incinerator. Chris explains that his parents were opposed to the incinerator when it was first built. Chris's father used to work for the Department of the Environment, until he opposed the expansion of the dump to include the incinerator. Now Chris's father is unemployed.

As the story develops, you may find out that Marina and her family have moved back to Rocky Harbour, where her father grew up. Marina's father, Mr. Ryerson, became sick while working at a chemical plant. Marina tells Chris that the doctors could not prove
that the chemical exposure caused his near fatal illness.
Marina's father seems to like Chris and takes an interest in the injured seagull. Chris is interested in Mr. Ryerson's little inventions that appear throughout their home.
The chapter ends with Chris realizing that getting involved with Marina might be much more complicated than he had originally thought.
Throughout the novel so far, some character traits you observe in the characters are honesty, compassion, fear, anger, pain, and joy.
