Then Chris calls Marina for a "date" to go sailing together. Before they set off windsurfing, they carefully check the condition of the polluted water. Several dead birds are visible in the waves. When Chris sees how upset Marina is, he suggests that
they take the birds to a lab to find out what killed them.
The chapter ends with Chris and Marina sharing their feelings about being "losers." As the conversation continues, they realize that many of their attitudes and beliefs are similar.
In this sixth chapter, Jack and Marina make some progress in their attempt to find out what killed the birds. Their relationship is becoming stronger as the days progress.
The opening scene in this chapter begins with Marina making a call to Chris, asking him to come to her house as soon as possible. Chris pays the courier to deliver the birds to the lab. Chris begins to feel a little overwhelmed by Marina's efficiency and determination.

On the way to Marina's home, Chris is almost hit by a garbage truck pulling out onto the main road as he bikes by the dump. Chris hurts his leg in an attempt to keep Jack, the injured seagull, from being hurt.
When Chris arrives at Marina's house, he meets Marina's mother. Marina's father asks to see Jack while Chris and Marina spend some time together. Marina surprises Chris with her concern and kindness while bandaging up his knee from the biking accident. The two of them agree that they should continue with their investigation into what impact the incinerator is having on the environment.
The chapter ends with Marina asking if Jack can stay at her house because her father has taken a great interest in the injured bird.
