Before starting this activity, please read chapters 9 and 10 of the novel . Remember to think about the strategies you can use as you read.
Chapter 9 of the novel gives us some news about Chris's parents' plan to deal with the incinerator and the trouble it has caused their family.
The chapter opens with Chris and Marina being escorted away from the incinerator by the police. As they are driven home by a police officer, we learn that Mr. Gibson has decided not to press charges against them. Chris begins to worry that Marina's parents
won't approve of him. He feels that they will blame him for getting her in trouble!
Chris is even more upset when he gets home and finds out that his parents have decided they should move west. His parents believe his father would have more luck getting a job where he is not known for having been an opponent to the incinerator in his community. Chris becomes angry and protests the idea of moving away.
Chris's father then shares more information with Chris about why they want to move. Chris learns that the Regional Authority has applied for permission to put in another incinerator to burn even more toxic waste. Chris's parents are very concerned about the danger another incinerator will pose to the family's health. They believe that most people will be more interested in the money the community will receive for taking waste products than in their own health.

Chapter 10 of the novel shows us how Chris tries to deal with the news that his parents want to move and his confusion about the change in attitude his relationship with Marina has caused in him.
The chapter opens with Chris thinking about his parents' decision to move. His parents believe that to continue fighting a losing battle against the incinerator is hopeless. When he thinks about their decision from their point of view, he realizes that it makes sense.
