Writing 1.5 Using Japanese Writing Fonts

Now that you have mastered writing the Hiragana characters by hand, you can move on to typing the Hiragana characters on the computer. 

When typing Hiragana characters, you need to set up your computer for Japanese Text Input and then you need to type in Romaji.

Depending on the type of computer you have, the set-up for the Japanese Text Input will be different. 


How to Install Japanese Text

Step 1:  Go to the Windows icon in the lower left hand corner of the window.

Step 2:  Type "Control Panel" and then click on the Control Panel Desktop app. 

Step 3:  Select "Clock, Language and Region."

Step 4:  Click "Add a language."

Step 5:  Select "Japanese."

Step 6:  Select "Add."
Step 1:  Click the "Start" button.

Step 2:  Click "Control Panel."

Step 3:  Click "Region and Language."

Step 4:  Click on the "Keyboards and Languages" tab at the top of the window.

Step 5:  Click "Change keyboards..."

Step 6:  Click "Add..."

Step 7:  Select "Japanese (Japan)."



Step 8:  Make sure "Japanese" and "Microsoft IME" are checked off and then click "OK."



Step 9:  Click "Apply" in the lower right hand corner.


Step 1:  Go to "System Preferences."

Step 2:  Select "Language and Region."

Step 3:  Click the "+" button to add "Japanese" as one of your preferred languages.

Step 4:  Click on "Keyboard Preferences."

Step 5:  Click on "Input Sources" at the top of the screen.

Step 6:  In the "Input Modes" section, make sure you put a check mark next to "Hiragana" and "Katakana."

Step 7:  Make sure there is a check mark next to "Show Input menu in menu bar" at the bottom of the screen.

How to Write in Hiragana on the Computer

Step 1:  Open either your Internet browser or a word processing document. 

Step 2:  Insert your cursor into a text field in your browser or into the word processing document. 

At this point, you should have an icon appear in the bottom right hand of your taskbar.  It should say "EN."  If you do not see it, you may have to re-start your computer after the initial installation of the Japanese keyboard. 


 
Step 3:  Click the "EN." 

"English" and "Japanese" should both be listed as input methods.



Step 4:  Click "Japanese."

This is what you should see once you have selected "Japanese."



Step 5:  Click on the "A" and then a menu will appear.  Select "Hiragana."



Step 6:  Once "Hiragana" is selected, your menu bar will look like this:



Step 7:  Click back into your Word document or Internet field and start typing in Romaji. 
Your Romaji characters should instantly change to Hiragana! 

Step 8:  Practice your A and KA Hiragana characters in your browser or your word processing document to make sure you can write each character on the computer.   

Once you have finished with a set of characters, hit the "Enter" button and it will "end" that group of characters.  If you hit the space bar, it will change the characters into Kanji.
