KANJI WA NAN DESU KA.
In Unit 1, you were briefly introduced to the concept of Kanji characters.
Kanji is one of the three writing systems used in Japanese and originated from the Chinese language.

The ON YOMI (or ON Reading) is the way you read a Kanji character based off of the Chinese reading and sound.
All Kanji characters have an ON yomi (some have more than one).
The ON YOMI is generally used when multiple Kanji characters are written together.

The KUN YOMI (or KUN Reading) is the Japanese sound and reading associated with the Kanji character.
All Kanji characters have a KUN yomi, too.
The KUN YOMI is generally used when the Kanji is by itself and connected with Hiragana characters. When Hiragana characters are attached to a Kanji character to complete a word, they are called okurigana.
