Writing 5.1 Hiragana with Diacritics

A diacritic is a mark added to a Hiragana character to change the sound that the character makes.

DAKUTEN γ‚›
The "DAKUTEN" are two small, parallel lines added to the upper right side of a character to change the sound.

This is applicable to the KA, SA, TA and HA lines.

When you add the "DAKUTEN" to a line, the initial sound (the consonant's sound) of the character changes.

In casual speak, the "DAKUTEN" is also known as "TEN TEN" which means "two marks."

HANDAKUTEN Β°
The "HANDAKUTEN" is another diacritic that you can add to Hiragana characters to change the sound.

The "HANDAKUTEN" is a small circle that you put towards the upper right of the character and it is applicable to the HA line.

In casual speak, the "HADAKUTEN" is also known as "MARU " which means "circle."
