6.5 Conjunctions: そして、それから and でも

A conjunction is a word used to connect sentences or parts of sentences (clauses).

So far we have been writing simple sentences.  Now we can add a bit more flow to our writing by using these conjunctions.

それから for "and," "and then," "then".

You can use それから at the beginning of a sentence to show the order of things and how the sentence is related to the previous sentence.

わたしはテニス(tenisu)をしました。それからひるごはんをたべました。

I played tennis.  And then I ate lunch.

そして for "and," "and then," "after that."

You can use そして at the beginning of a sentence for the same type of situation as それから.  They are very similar conjunctions.

わたしはおんがくをききました。そしてほんをよみました。

I listened to music.  And then I read a book.

でも
でも is used when you want to give an opposing view from one you just stated.  でも is like saying "but."  Use it at the beginning of your sentence.

このいちごはおおきいです。でもあまくないです。

This strawberry is big.  But it is not sweet.

そのほんはたかいです。でもおもしろくないです。

That book is expensive.  But it is not interesting.

にほんごはむずかしいです。でもおもしろいです。

Japanese is difficult.  But it is interesting.

これはまっちゃパフェです。

In a green tea parfait like this, there is green tea ice cream, sweetened red beans and mochi (glutinous rice beaten into chewy ball shapes) along with  Westernized parfait ingredients such as whipping cream.

Many Japanese desserts contain mochi in some form along with the sweetened red beans (either in a paste or in their original bean form).  Japanese desserts go very well with green tea because the tea balances out the sweetness of the red beans.
