6.6 The particles と and も

Like the particle に, the particle と has more than one usage.  Let's look at them now!

When you want to join nouns together with "and," you use the particle と. 

ちちとはははうれしいです。
My father and mother are happy.

すしとさしみはおいしいです。
Sushi and sashimi are delicious.

にほんごとえいごはおもしろいです。
Japanese and English are interesting.

がっこうとゆうびんきょくにいきました。
I went to school and to the post office. 

When you want to talk about someone with whom you do something, you use the particle と. 

わたしはだいすけさんとがっこうにいきます。
I go to school with Daisuke-san.

あにはいもうととえきにいきます。
My older brother goes to the station with my younger sister.

わたしはともだちとしゅくだいをします。
I do homework with my friend.

Now let's look at the particle も.

The particle も is used to indicate similarity to something already mentioned. 

わたしはすしをたべました。ちちもすしをたべました。
I ate sushi.  My father ate sushi, too. 

わたしはせいとです。だいすけさんもせいとです。
I am a student.  Daisuke-san is also a student. 

わたしはうどんをたべました。てんぷらもたべました。
I ate udon.  I also ate tempura.

Let's look at what happens when you use も in a negative sentence.

わたしはすしをたべません。さしみもたべません。
I don't eat sushi.  I don't eat sashimi either. 

わたしはさけをのみません。おちゃものみません。
I don't drink sake.  I don't drink green tea either. 

さかなはおいしくないです。なっとうもおいしくないです。
Fish isn't tasty.  Fermented soybeans aren't tasty either. 

You may have noticed that in the sentences above, the も was placed where we normally would have put the は and を. 

The も replaces は、を、が but does not replace に.  If there is a sentence with a に, the も will go right after the に.

わたしはとう きょう にいきます。 きょう とにもいきます。
I am going to Tokyo. I am also going to Kyoto.

だいすけさんはがっこうにいきます。としょかんにもいきます。
Daisuke-san is going to school.  He is also going to the library.
