In this lesson, you will learn about the daily lives of various groups of people in ancient Athens.
Introduction
Pericles is responsible for constructing many of Athenians major public buildings. These monuments still stand after more than two thousand years despite being shaken by earthquakes, set on fire, shattered by bullets, looted and defaced.
The Parthenon is the most famous building having a proportion and balance which is admired by many. It was built of limestone and marble. The joints between stone blocks are almost invisible. It housed an an ivory and gold statue of Athena built by sculptor Pheidias. The Parthenon used the earliest type of Greek column, Doric.
