Introduction

Unit 4 is about democracy as practised by the Iroquois Confederacy in what is now eastern Canada and northeastern United States.

Many of us are familiar with the term Iroquois, but it is not the name these people call themselves.  The real name of the people the French settlers called Iroquois is Haudenosaunee.  You may remember learning about them in grade five in the Great Lakes region of Canada– these are the people of the longhouse.  They are also known as the Six Nations.

The Iroquois or Haudenosaunee Confederacy still exists.  You can read more about it on the Haudenosaunee Confederacy website.
