Think about This:

There are many other jobs that might require you to use the two measurement systems and convert units from one system to the next.

They include carpenter, hairstylist, painter, landscaper, and welder. There may be many more!

There are also instances in everyday life when you might want to convert from metric to imperial, as you will see in the examples below.

Converting from Metric to Imperial

You will once again use the chart below. When you do this, the process is the same as converting imperial to metric, except you use the metric to imperial equivalents side of the chart (the right-hand side).

Here's an example:

Jan has registered for a 10 km race. How many miles is this?

Step 1: Look under the heading "Metric to Imperial Equivalents"

Step 2: Find the kilometre to miles equivalent: It is 1 km = .62 m. This is the conversion factor.

Step 3: Multiply 10 by .62:

               10 x .62 = 6.2 miles

Step 4: 10 kilometres is equal to 6.2 miles.

Try This:

Do the following conversion on your own.

Joe's prize calf measured 1.06 m. How many feet is this?

Step 1: Look under the heading "Metric to Imperial Equivalents"

Step 2: Find the metres to feet equivalent: It is 1 m = 3.3. This is the conversion factor.

Step 3: Multiply 1.06 by 3.3:
1.06 x 3.3 = 3.498 (which you can round up to 3.5)

Step 4: 1.06 metres is equal to 3.5 feet.

Self-check!

Try This!

Convert the following metric units to imperial units using the chart below.

1. Convert 15 litres to quarts.

2. Convert 25 kilograms to pounds.

3. Convert 27 ยฐCelsius to Fahrenheit.

When you are finished, click on the tab below to check your answers!

1 l = .88 qt
15 x .88 = 13.2
15 litres is equal to 13.2 quarts.

1 kg = 2.2 lb
25 x 2.2 = 55

25 kilograms is equal to 55 pounds.

27 x 9/5 + 32 = 80.6

27 ยฐC is equal to 80.6 ยฐF.
