Observe: Human Causes of Climate Change

Humans can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.  Humans can make choices based on information about climate change.

The total amount of CO2 you emit, is called your carbon footprint.

Any human activity that puts carbon dioxide into the atmosphere can increase your carbon footprint. For example, humans burn fossil fuels to cheaply transport materials, power factories, and heat and cool homes. Humans use digital devices or gasoline powered lawnmowers. These activities release carbon dioxide, a gas that traps heat in the air.

Although the evidence is inconclusive that burning fossil fuels increases climate change, rising levels of carbon dioxide have many people trying to reduce their carbon footprint. Some people try to change their lives by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Or, they drive fuel efficient cars. Or, they protect forests and plant more trees because trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Carbon Footprint
