Course Overview

Welcome to Science 4 Online!

Grade 4 Science is your opportunity to question, to explore, to investigate, to predict, to manipulate, to observe, to describe, and to better understand  the world around you. You will build knowledge and develop confidence and skill to become a better problem-solver as you investigate in four topic areas:

  1. Light and Shadows
  2. Plant Growth and Changes
  3. Waste and Our World
  4. Building Devices with Simple Machines
The topics may be completed in any order you feel works best, however it is highly recommended to complete the Plant Growth and Changes unit in spring to accommodate the activities within the unit. Most topics should take approximately eight to ten weeks to complete. However, with the help of your teacher, you will set a pace that is appropriate for you.

Pre-Assessment

A week or two prior to starting a unit you will complete the Pre-Assessment activity. This activity is NOT graded. It is simply to help you see what you already know about the topic and to have you start thinking about the topic you will soon study.

Activities
There are three types of activities in each unit:

  • Observe

The Observe activity requires you to view a video, read an article, and/or visit a website as you complete a graphic organizer to help you gather information about a certain topic. All the note-taking organizers are saved in your Notebook Folder. These can then be used for all assessments.

  • Discover

The Discover activity requires you to complete a task with the information gathered. You might build something, complete a sorting activity, complete a writing activity, do a research project or other. These activities help you discover the world around you.

  • Explore

The Explore activities are scientific experiments. You will be asked a question to which you will need to write a hypothesis. Next, you will be guided as you test this hypothesis, make observations and then draw conclusions based on your observations.

Notebook

You will be asked to save all of your activities and exit passes to your Notebook folder.  You will create a new Notebook folder for each unit.  Your teacher may ask to see your Notebook at any point throughout a unit, this will help them know if you are understanding all of the concepts covered.

Self-Check

At the end of each activity, you will find a Self-Check. These quizzes are graded by the computer, your teacher can see how you did, but they will NOT be kept for marks. They are for you to check how you are doing, if you understand what was taught in the activity or if you need to go back and review a little more before moving on to the next activity.

Exit Pass

At the end of a small section of work, you will find an Exit Pass. These short and quick activities allow you to see how you are doing and if you understand the main concepts that are being taught. These are NOT graded but are used to provide information to your teacher that he or she can then use to help you move forward in your learning. Your teacher may ask you to send in your Exit Pass, or Notebook, to check your understanding of the concepts.

Assessment

You will find various types of assessment of your learning as you work through the units.  Each unit contains an Assessment at the end of each section and one Final Assessment.  These assessments are your opportunity to show your teacher your understanding of the concepts.  Your assessments should be saved to your Notebook Folder. All assessments are submitted to your teacher for marking.
