Check Your Answers
1. List five objects that are biodegradable and five objects that are non-biodegradable. Answers will vary.
Biodegradable | Non-biodegradable |
---|---|
Lettuce | Aluminum foil |
Paper | Glass |
Cardboard | Plastic bags |
Eggshells | Styrofoam |
Wood | Pop Cans |
2. Which items in the experiment showed no signs of decomposing?
- Styrofoam
- Plastic bag? Some grocery bags are now made with plant based plastics, which may start to show signs of decomposition.
- Cotton fabric? In the video there were very early signs of decomposition beginning.
- Aluminum foil
- Glass
3. Explain why some of the items in the experiment are biodegradable, but did not decompose during the experiment?
- Mostly this has to do with the time frame of the experiment. Every biodegradable object will take a different amount of time to decompose. Two weeks likely was not long enough to see significant signs of decomposition on your cotton cloth, even though cotton is biodegradable.
