Check Your Answers

1. List five objects that are biodegradable and five objects that are non-biodegradable.  Answers will vary.
 Biodegradable  Non-biodegradable
 Lettuce  Aluminum foil
 Paper  Glass
 Cardboard  Plastic bags
 Eggshells  Styrofoam
 Wood  Pop Cans

2. Which items in the experiment showed no signs of decomposing?
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic bag? Some grocery bags are now made with plant based plastics, which may start to show signs of decomposition.
  • Cotton fabric?  In the video there were very early signs of decomposition beginning.
  • Aluminum foil
  • Glass
3. Explain why some of the items in the experiment are biodegradable, but did not decompose during the experiment?
  • Mostly this has to do with the time frame of the experiment.  Every biodegradable object will take a different amount of time to decompose.  Two weeks likely was not long enough to see significant signs of decomposition on your cotton cloth, even though cotton is biodegradable.
